The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu is a demanding experience. You’ll hike for 5 days at high altitude, reaching over 4,500 meters above sea level.
Each day, you’ll gain between 300 and 700 meters in elevation. Starting from Cusco at 3,400 meters, you’ll gradually ascend to the Salkantay Pass, which rises above 4,000 meters.
It’s important to make sure your body and mind are prepared to handle both the physical effort and the altitude.
On average, we walk around six hours per day. The itinerary includes areas affected by landslides, steep trails, and uneven terrain, but you’ll always be accompanied by our guides, who will support you whenever needed.
The experience is not cancelled due to bad weather. Keep in mind that weather in Cusco is highly unpredictable, and it’s impossible to know exactly what conditions you’ll encounter in the mountains.
In general, the first night at altitude can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to around -5°C. Toward the end of the trek, we enter the Peruvian jungle, where temperatures can reach around 25°C.
You may experience extreme cold, rain, and in some cases even snow at higher elevations. It’s important to be prepared for changing conditions. Even if you’re trekking in summer, we strongly recommend bringing extra layers and proper weather protection.
No, the experience is not cancelled due to rain in the forecast. It’s important to keep in mind that the most accurate weather forecasts are usually within 24 to 48 hours in advance.
Yes, you’ll have the opportunity to charge your devices at the camps.
Charging is available for a few hours each day, and in some camps it’s not allowed to leave phones or cameras plugged in overnight.
Wi-Fi is available in some camps.
