In short: kilometers measure the ground; mountains are measured upward. Elevation gain is how many meters you climb and descend in total, and it is the number that tells you how you will feel. Twelve kilometers with 690 meters of climbing is a moderate day. The same twelve with 1,270 meters is a different trip.
You signed up for a trip because "it's only 12 kilometers." That number has made more people suffer in the mountains than any other. Not because it is wrong, but because it is incomplete: it is missing the figure almost nobody checks, the one MONS lists for every day of every trip page. In this guide we show you how to read it, using the real numbers from our own trips.
What is elevation gain on a mountain trip?
Elevation gain is the sum of every meter you climb during the day, even if there are descents in between. It comes with a sign: positive gain (+) counts what you go up and negative (−) counts what you go down. It is not the height of the summit.
That last point confuses a lot of people. Cerro Champaquí stands 2,790 meters above sea level, but on summit day you do not climb 2,790 meters: you climb 690, because the mountain hut is already high up. Altitude tells you where you finish. Elevation gain tells you how much work it took to get there.
It is not the same as slope either. Two trails can share the same total gain and feel completely different: one spreads it over many gentle kilometers and the other packs it into a single climb. That is why you should always read distance and elevation gain together.
MONS trip pages show both figures for every day, for example "12 km, +1,270 m," which says far more than "moderate" or "demanding."
Why do 12 kilometers tell you nothing?
Because our own trips include two days of exactly 12 kilometers that have nothing in common: summit day on Champaquí and summit day on Cerro del Medio. One climbs 690 meters and the other 1,270. One is rated moderate and the other, demanding.

On Champaquí you arrive tired, but still chatting. On Cerro del Medio you do not chat: you breathe. The distance is identical; what changes is how much you had to lift your own body.
Why is climbing so much harder than walking on flat ground?
Because walking on flat ground only costs you moving forward, while climbing costs you lifting your whole body, plus your pack, step after step. It is the difference between pushing something and lifting it. Your heart rate climbs, your breathing speeds up and your pace drops by half, even on a good trail.
Every uphill step is a small squat with your own body weight. If you weigh 70 kilos and carry 8 in your pack, a day with 1,000 meters of gain means lifting 78 kilos a full kilometer straight up. You cannot do that at city walking speed.
A study published in 2018 in The Journal of Physiological Sciences measured this precisely: on the same treadmill, at the same speed and for the same time, walking uphill produced significantly higher intensity and perceived fatigue than walking downhill.
Then add altitude. Above 3,000 meters every breath carries less oxygen, so the same gain weighs more on Cerro del Medio than it does in the hills of Córdoba.
How much time does elevation gain add?
The rule I use at MONS is simple: for every 300 meters of climbing, add one hour to whatever you thought the day would take. It is conservative on purpose, because it accounts for groups, packs and altitude. With that rule alone, no trip will catch you off guard again.
There is a more formal method. MIDE, the system used by the Spanish Mountain Sports Federation, works like this, as explained by Montaña Segura (in Spanish):
- Time for distance: 4 km per hour on good trails, 3 on rough or rocky ground.
- Time for elevation: 400 meters per hour going up and 600 going down.
- Combine them: take the larger of the two and add half of the other.
Applied to summit day on Cerro del Medio, that gives about 6 hours and 45 minutes of actual walking. The trip page says almost 12 hours. The difference is rest stops, group pace and, above all, altitude: no desk formula knows you are standing at 4,000 meters.
How do you read a trip page before booking?
Read the hardest day first, not the average. Look for the distance, the positive and negative elevation, and the highest point. With those four figures and one simple division you will know whether the trip is right for you or whether another one should come first.
This is how we read one, in this order:
- Find the longest day. The rest of the trip is usually easier; that day decides whether you enjoy it.
- Check the positive gain. Up to about 800 meters is a moderate day; from 1,000 upward it is demanding.
- Check the negative gain. A descent of more than 1,000 meters is also work, even if the page calls it "descent."
- Divide gain by kilometers. More than 100 meters per kilometer means a sustained climb.
- Check the highest point. Above 3,000 meters, everything takes longer.
If you are still unsure, ask. Booking the right trip beats booking the prettiest one.
How much elevation gain does each trip have?
These are the hardest days of our trips, with the numbers from each trip page. Notice how difficulty follows elevation gain and meters per kilometer much more closely than distance: the longest day on the list is not the hardest one.

Bautismo de Montaña is the clearest case: only 7.3 km, but steep ones, and that is why its big day takes close to ten hours.
Why do descents wear you out so much?
Because going downhill, your muscles work as brakes: they lengthen while producing force so you do not fall. That work, called eccentric, is easier on your heart but harder on muscle fibers. Legs get wrecked going down, not up, and the pain shows up the next day.
The same 2018 study showed it: after walking downhill, next-day soreness in the thighs, calves and glutes was significantly higher than after walking uphill, even though heart rate and fatigue during the exercise had been lower. That is why it fools you: going down feels like resting, and the next day you cannot walk down a flight of stairs.
Our trips include some big descents. Day 4 of the Salkantay trek drops 1,750 meters, and the last day on Champaquí descends 800 meters over 15 km. To protect your knees on those sections, trekking poles help a lot, along with short steps and not running even when the slope invites you to.
How do you train for elevation gain?
By going up and down. Walking on flat ground does not prepare you for mountains: you need hills, stairs or slopes with real elevation gain, and descents too. The most useful approach is adding elevation week by week in the months before your trip, carrying the pack you will use.
A good reference is the elevation of your trip. If the big day has 800 meters, arrive having done several walks of 500 to 700 meters without finishing wrecked. If it has 1,300, you need more time and more endurance. Our 30, 60 and 90 day training plan is built on that logic.
Descents can be trained as well. A study published in 2017 in PLoS One found that five minutes of downhill walking a week earlier sharply reduced muscle soreness after 40 minutes of downhill walking: peak soreness fell by about two thirds compared with people who had skipped that preparation. In plain terms: do not show up in the mountains without ever having walked downhill.
How much elevation gain is right for a beginner?
If you have never been trekking, start with days of 400 to 800 meters of gain, such as Pueblo Escondido, Los Gigantes or Champaquí. If those felt comfortable, the next step is the 900 to 1,300 meter days of the high mountains in Mendoza.
What matters is not the number itself but the jump. Going from 400 to 800 meters is reasonable. Going from 400 straight to 1,300 is a recipe for a bad day, even if the distance looks similar and even if you feel fit.

What is positive elevation gain?
It is the sum of every meter you climb in a day, even if there are descents in between. It is written with a plus sign, for example +800 m.
What is negative elevation gain?
It is the sum of the meters you descend. It is written with a minus sign, for example −800 m, and it is tiring too, especially for your leg muscles.
Is elevation gain the same as the height of the mountain?
No. Height tells you how many meters above sea level the summit sits. Elevation gain tells you how many meters you climb from wherever you start that day.
How much elevation gain is a lot for a beginner?
As a guide, up to about 800 meters in a day is a moderate outing. From 1,000 meters upward it is demanding, especially if you are also at altitude.
How long does it take to climb 1,000 meters of elevation?
According to the MIDE method, about 400 meters per hour going up, which means two and a half hours without stops. With a group, a pack and rest breaks, plan for quite a bit more.
Why do my legs hurt more after going downhill?
Because on the way down your muscles brake your body while lengthening, a type of work called eccentric that damages muscle fibers more. The pain appears the next day and is usually stronger than after climbing.
What does meters per kilometer mean?
