Champaquí or Los Gigantes: Which Trek to Do First

Champaquí (2,790 m, 3 days) and Los Gigantes (Mogote, 2 days) are the two classic treks in Córdoba. Distance, elevation gain and which one to do first.

In short: both are moderate, both sleep in a hut and neither requires experience. Los Gigantes takes 2 days, climbs Cerro Mogote and covers 27 km among caves and granite. Champaquí takes 3 days, reaches 2,790 m, the highest point in Córdoba, and covers 42 km. For your first trek, Los Gigantes is half the commitment.

These are the first two names that come up when someone looks for their first trek in Córdoba, and for good reason. But people often choose the wrong one, because they compare altitude when what really matters is something else: how many days in a row you will walk and how many kilometers they add up to.

What is the difference between Champaquí and Los Gigantes?

Length and landscape. Champaquí is three days to the highest summit in the province of Córdoba, across high grasslands and tabaquillo forests. Los Gigantes is two days in a granite massif with house-sized boulders and narrow caves hidden between the rocks.

How hard is each one?

Both are moderate on the MONS scale. Neither involves climbing or technical sections: you walk. The challenge comes from 700 to 800 meters of elevation gain per day, rocky terrain and, especially on Champaquí, stringing together three days of walking in a row.

On Los Gigantes the terrain is more uneven: steep trails, rock and sections with landslides. You walk about six hours a day on average. Day 1 is 12 km with 700 m of gain and day 2, the hardest, is 15 km with 800 m, climbing Mogote via the Cuesta del Perro.

On Champaquí the effort is spread differently. Day 1 is the heaviest, because you cover 15 km with 800 m of gain carrying your full pack. Day 2, summit day, you go light: the big pack stays at the hut and it is about five hours to the top. On day 3 you return along the same trail as the first day.

Which is better for a beginner?

Both are designed for beginners and neither requires previous experience. If you have never done a multi-day trek, Los Gigantes is half the commitment: one day less, 15 km less and a single night away. If you already walk regularly and the highest summit appeals to you, go straight to Champaquí.

The question to ask yourself is not "can I?" but "do I want three days?". One night in a hut is a short, complete test: backpack, trail, group dinner, sleeping in a bunk bed and walking again the next day. If you enjoy it, Champaquí is the natural next step.

There is something in Champaquí's favor that many people do not know: if you have never carried a pack for three days in a row, you can hire a porter service so you do not have to carry it. That makes it much friendlier as a first experience. If you are still unsure what a guided trip looks like day to day, read what to expect on your first trek.

What is the Los Gigantes trek like?

Two days. On the first you climb Cerro de la Cruz (2,185 m) and explore the Salamanca, Helechos and Pajaritos caves. On the second you climb Cerro Mogote, the highest point of the massif, and return to the hut via the Sendero Norte trail.

According to Córdoba Turismo, Los Gigantes sits at the northern end of the Sierras Grandes and is one of the most important rock climbing areas in the country, with around 400 bolted routes. The agency lists Mogote at 2,374 m; our trip page lists it at 2,384 m.

What makes the massif unique is not its height but its rock: huge shapes, passages and caves unlike anything else in the Córdoba hills. You sleep in a hut with beds, home-cooked food, hot water and basic WiFi. Full details are in our complete guide to Los Gigantes.

What is the Champaquí trek like?

Three days from Villa Alpina. Day 1 is a 15 km approach crossing the Arroyo Socavón stream and the Desierto de la Virgen. Day 2 is summit day with a light pack, passing the Cueva de los 40. Day 3 you return along the same trail.

Córdoba Turismo describes the Villa Alpina route as a 42 km circuit over 3 days of moderate difficulty, and notes that Champaquí and its surroundings are classified as a risk area, with mandatory access registration at the checkpoints where the trails begin.

You sleep two nights in a mountain hut, with beds, hot showers and all meals covered except lunch on the first day. According to Andeshandbook, it must be one of the most climbed mountains in Argentina. We cover it in full in our Cerro Champaquí guide.

When is the best time to go?

You can walk both all year. For Champaquí, autumn, from March to June, is the best window: stable weather, comfortable temperatures and good visibility. For Los Gigantes, from April to November, when the heat eases and the summer rains drop off.

Spring is also very good for both, with mild temperatures and a higher chance of rain. Summer means starting early, protecting yourself from the sun and watching for afternoon storms, which build fast in the hills. Winter brings strong cold at night and, sometimes, snow on the higher ground.

Neither trip is cancelled because of a rain forecast: in the mountains the most reliable forecasts come 24 to 48 hours ahead, and we follow them until the last moment. If conditions are risky on the day, the guides adjust or shorten the route. We explain it month by month in the best time to trek in Córdoba.

What should you bring?

For both: broken-in hiking boots, three clothing layers, a waterproof jacket, 2 liters of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp and trekking poles. For Champaquí you also need a sleeping bag for the hut and a bigger backpack, from 40 to 60 liters.

The three-layer logic is the same on both trips:

  1. Base layer, thermal and breathable, to move sweat away from your body.
  2. Mid layer, a fleece or synthetic jacket, to hold in heat.
  3. Outer layer, waterproof and windproof, against rain and gusts.

In the hills the weather changes fast, and what you do not need during the day you will miss at night. A 30 liter pack is enough for Los Gigantes. We recommend drinking at least 2 liters of water a day on both treks; the guides show you where to refill at the streams.

What if I want to do both?

That is the most common path. First Los Gigantes, to try a night in a hut and two days of walking, and then Champaquí, with one more day and the highest summit in Córdoba. The reverse order also works if you already have some trekking experience.

Doing them in that order has a concrete advantage: you arrive at Champaquí knowing how to pack, how you sleep in a hut and how hard the second day of walking feels, which is the one that surprises beginners the most. With that information, the third day stops being a mystery.

There is a third option worth considering: Pueblo Escondido and Cerro Áspero, also two days, in the hills of San Luis. And when the hills start to feel small, the next step is the Andes: Bautismo de Montaña in Mendoza is designed exactly for that, with three days in a hut and your first summit above 3,500 meters.
