Los Gigantes Trek: The Complete Guide from Córdoba

Los Gigantes Trek: The Complete Guide from Córdoba

A 2-day granite trek in the Sierras Grandes: Cerro de la Cruz, a night in a mountain refuge, difficulty, best season, gear and what it costs.

About 30 km from Tanti, right in the Pampa de Achala, the Los Gigantes massif rises out of Córdoba's Sierras Grandes. It can be a light weekend walk, or two days with real elevation, a night in a mountain refuge, and trails winding through granite formations that look like they belong on another planet.

At MONS we run it as a 2-day trek, with licensed alternative-tourism guides and meal logistics included. If you're coming from the city of Córdoba, Rosario or Buenos Aires, this guide lays out what to expect before you book.

In brief
It's a 2-day trek with a night in a mountain refuge — an ideal first mountain trip.
Moderate difficulty: no technical climbing, but rocky stretches and 400–600 m of elevation gain per day.
Best season: April to November, once the summer heat and rain ease off.
High point on day one: Cerro de la Cruz, 2,185 m.
Departs from the city of Córdoba the same day; the massif sits about 30 km from Tanti.

What does the 2-day Los Gigantes itinerary look like?

The classic program runs two days, with a night in a mountain refuge in between. On day one you climb Cerro de la Cruz (2,185 m), stop by caves like the Cueva de la Salamanca, and spend the night at the refuge. Day two's challenge is Cerro Mogote, the highest point on the massif — you go up via La Cuesta del Perro and cross the most maze-like part of the range before heading back.

Each day runs 6 to 8 hours on foot, depending on the group's pace. This isn't a race — we stop to eat, take photos, and let everyone catch their breath. That's the real value of doing it guided, on actual mountain time instead of brochure time.

The night at the refuge is part of the experience, not just a roof over your head. There's a hot meal, mate passed around, and real rest before day two. You arrive with energy for the most striking stretch of the route, where the granite forms corridors and stone windows at every turn.

How difficult is the Los Gigantes trek?

It's a moderate-difficulty trek: no technical climbing, but there are rocky stretches, exposure to the Achala wind, and elevation changes you'll actually feel. Each day climbs and drops between 400 and 600 m, so your legs do real work. You don't need mountain experience or technical rope gear.

It's worth showing up with trained legs, though. If you've never walked more than 4 hours straight with a pack, put in a month of training walks before you sign up. Is that prep worth it? Absolutely — you get to enjoy the scenery instead of suffering through every climb.

It's a logical next step if you want to go beyond day hikes. A lot of people who do Los Gigantes go on to tackle the Cerro Champaquí trek, Córdoba's high point at 2,790 m. Los Gigantes is the best trial run for finding out how your body handles two straight days of trekking.

When's the best time to visit Los Gigantes?

The best window runs from April to November, once the extreme summer heat eases and the sky tends to be more stable. The massif feels different every season, and it's worth knowing what you're walking into before picking a date.

  • Autumn (April–June): cool, stable days, good visibility — the most comfortable window to walk.
  • Winter (June–August): intense cold, possible frost or snow — pack extra thermal layers and real warmth.
  • Spring (September–November): pleasant temperatures, Achala wind — a great season, just check the wind forecast.
  • Summer (December–March): strong heat and afternoon storms — start very early and carry more water than you think you'll need.

Winter is perfectly walkable with the right gear. In summer, the real challenge is the heat and the afternoon electrical storms typical of Achala — so we start early and adjust the plan to the forecast.

What should I bring on the Los Gigantes trek?

The non-negotiables are trekking footwear with real grip, poles, a synthetic base layer and a windproof jacket. The most common mistake we see in the group is street sneakers or city clothes. Come ready to enjoy nature in gear that's actually built for it.

Always pack a headlamp, a cap and sunglasses, light gloves, and real warm layers for the refuge night — even if the day starts out mild. In the mountains, the temperature drops fast the moment the sun goes down. Travel light, but never skimp on warmth.

Essential gear for the two days:

  • Trekking footwear (boots recommended)
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended)
  • Backpack with padded straps and hip belt
  • Synthetic base layer (skip cotton — it holds moisture)
  • Windproof, waterproof jacket
  • Warm layer for the refuge night
  • Headlamp, cap and sunglasses, light gloves
  • Water bottles for 2 liters, and sunscreen

If you want to fine-tune your pack list, the same layering and warmth logic we use for Champaquí applies here — see it in detail in our full guide to climbing Cerro Champaquí.

Can Los Gigantes be done in a single day?

Yes — you'd need to narrow down which part of the area you visit to fit it into one day.
