Is the Salkantay Trek Difficult? Everything About its Physical Demands
One of the most common concerns is: "Will I be able to make it?". Salkantay is rated as a medium-high difficulty trek, but with nuances you should know.
The Difference Between Fatigue and Risk
Salkantay is not dangerous, but it is demanding.
- Altitude: The biggest obstacle. The ascent to the Pass (Day 2) requires good prior acclimatization in Cusco.
- Elevation Change: The descents are long (which can affect the knees). We highly recommend the use of trekking poles.
How to Prepare at Home?
You don’t need to be an elite athlete. We recommend:
- Aerobic Training: Running or walking 10 km (6 miles) twice a week.
- Strength: Quad and calf exercises to endure the long descents.
- Simulation: Walk in the boots you will use in Peru to break them in.
The Mons Benefit: Portage Service
Many believe they must carry 15 kg (33 lbs). False. On our trips, you only carry a 20-liter daypack with essentials. The rest (sleeping bag, extra clothes) is carried by horses or porters. This reduces physical effort by 40%.
