Experience the Nevado del Chañi expedition. An 8-day ascent in Jujuy with guided acclimatization, high-altitude huts, and full safety support to reach nearly 6,000 meters.
UPCOMING DEPARTURES
THE EXPERIENCE
Nevado del Chañi is more than just a mountain — it is an Apu (a sacred spirit) that has watched over the Puna for thousands of years. Rising to nearly 6,000 meters, it represents the ultimate high-altitude challenge in northern Argentina.
On this 8-day expedition, you’re not just climbing to the summit. You’ll follow ancient trails, connect with local communities, and experience a deep physical and mental transformation. The challenge is significant, but our logistics are designed around a precise acclimatization process, allowing your body to adapt while you take in the landscape.
This is a very demanding expedition, designed for experienced trekkers with strong endurance and a solid mental attitude. During the itinerary, we’ll cover: - Day 3: vehicle transfer and a short hike gaining 600 m up to 4,200 m to support acclimatization - Day 4: 8 km with 800 m of elevation gain, carrying gear up to 5,000 m to strengthen acclimatization - Day 6: 4 km ascent with 800 m of elevation gain, carrying weight to reach high camp - Day 7: 8 km ascent with 900 m of elevation gain, requiring over 12 hours of effort as we attempt to reach the 5,896 m summit It’s important to understand that this is not a conventional hike: reduced oxygen levels, the cold of the Puna, and carrying weight on key days add a high level of physical demand. To make this challenge possible, our accommodation setup follows the progression of the expedition, prioritizing shelter and recovery: - Nights 1 & 7: comfortable beds and urban accommodation in Purmamarca - Nights 2, 3, 4 & 5: simple mountain huts managed by local communities in El Moreno and Flor de Pupusa (4,200 m). A warm environment with no showers, but with beds and nourishing meals that your body will truly appreciate after long days of climbing - Night 6: shared high-altitude tents at 5,000 m (Jefatura de Diablos) Far from traditional tourism, this experience gives you access to a truly unique natural environment — because some horizons can only be reached on foot, and some silences can only be found at the roof of Jujuy.
We meet in the afternoon in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. We take the time to carefully check your gear, get to know the group, and share our first dinner at an urban accommodation in Purmamarca.
Distance: 90 km by vehicle After breakfast, we cross the stunning Cuesta del Lipán and travel across the Salinas Grandes of Jujuy (90 km journey). In the afternoon, we arrive at the community of El Moreno (3,600 m), a key location to begin acclimatization. We stay at the refuge, spend time with the local community, and have dinner.
Distance: 40 km by vehicle · Elevation: +600 m We spend the morning exploring the picturesque village of El Moreno. After lunch, we continue by vehicle along mountain roads, gaining 600 meters in elevation until we reach Refugio Flor de Pupusa (4,200 m). This will be our stone base for the next few nights.
Distance: 8 km | Elevation: +800 m After breakfast, we begin hiking. We carry part of our personal and group gear, along with food, up to Jefatura de Diablos Camp (5,000 m). The terrain is not technically difficult, but the effort is key for acclimatization. We leave our gear at camp and return to the comfort of the refuge at 4,200 m to rest.
A key day for the success of the expedition. We move lightly around the refuge to allow the body to adapt to the altitude, recover, and be fully ready for what’s ahead.
Distance: 4 km | Elevation: +800 m After breakfast, we leave the comfort of the refuge and ascend once again to 5,000 m, this time to settle in for the night. We sleep in tents at the foot of the mountain, mentally preparing for summit day.
Distance: 8 km | Elevation: +900 m The longest and most demanding day. We set out before dawn, climbing along the Andean ridge to reach the 5,896 m summit of Nevado del Chañi. After experiencing the highest point in Jujuy, we break camp and begin a long descent back to the vehicles. We return to Purmamarca for a celebratory dinner and a well-deserved night in a real bed.
We share our final breakfast and bring the expedition to an end, taking with us an experience that truly transforms.
Thank you so much, MONS, for the excellent experience of reaching the summit of Nevado del Chañi!!! The guides, Germán and Facu, were absolute geniuses in every way! From leading us to the summit and handling the logistics to taking care of us at every single moment. Also, a huge thank you to my fellow climbers for the great vibes—essential for fully enjoying the experience, especially considering the limitations of the environment where these activities take place!!! Best regards to everyone! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

No, the experience is not cancelled due to rain in the forecast. It’s important to know that the most accurate forecasts are usually within 24 to 48 hours in advance.
We closely monitor weather conditions in the days leading up to the expedition. If additional gear is required, we’ll inform you beforehand based on the forecast and mountain conditions.
Everything you may need can be rented on the first day, when we’ll stop by a rental shop to make sure you’re fully equipped.
Once the trek begins, there is no mobile signal, so it’s important to use airplane mode to save battery.
We recommend taking care of your devices: at night, keep your phone and any battery-powered equipment inside your sleeping bag, as the cold drains batteries quickly.
Yes. You’ll be doing a physically demanding activity at altitude, reaching over 4,000 meters, so staying hydrated is essential throughout the expedition.
We recommend drinking around 3.5 liters per day. The better hydrated you are, the better your body will handle both the cold and the altitude.
During the expedition, we’ll hike along trails that cross streams. Our guides will show you exactly where and how to refill your water.
We recommend bringing containers with a total capacity of around 2 liters.
Our focus isn’t on performance, but on creating a real mountain experience — a chance to disconnect from the city while still enjoying a high level of service in a remote setting.
- Small groups: We keep things relaxed, so you can enjoy the trail, take a breath, and connect with the group.
- Inclusive meals: We take care of all the food. Full board is included, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available, even in the mountains.
- Mountain hut stay: We sleep in mountain huts. Facilities are simple compared to the city, but it’s the perfect place to rest and share the day.
- Everything taken care of: You just pack your backpack — we handle the logistics and safety.
